Mornings on Horseback by David McCullough

Mornings on Horseback by David McCullough A colorful narrative of Theodore Roosevelt's family, childhood, and extraordinary living. This book is not focused on his time as president. Rather, it pays much attention to the people whom he grew up with. It's filled with quotes from letters to and from his family and those closest to him. Highlights:  It is said also that among those who came looking for Roosevelt backing was Alexander Graham Bell, who hooked up his newly invented telephone so that Theodore could talk from his desk to a room down the hall. While agreeing that it was an interesting device, with potential as a  toy perhaps, Theodore thought it had no real future and refused to put money into it. "Take care of your morals first, your health next, and finally your studies", the elder Theodore wrote. ..his father had given him a brief lesson in economy -- this in view his possibly entering a life of science wherein he could expect to earn little or no money. Fixing the upower warning - WSL/ZSH/Spaceship prompt

Image
There are many cool prompts with ZSH. It's one of the reasons I made the switch from using BASH. However, after installing the spaceship prompt on Windows subsystem for Linux, I noticed the following error:  (upower:26251): UPower-WARNING **: 10:47:25.757: Cannot connect to upowerd: Could not connect: No such file or directory upowerd isn't running on WSL. There is no need for it to run. I don't even believe there is support for it on WSL. After doing some digging in the spaceship prompt code, it turns out this feature can be disabled with a simple environment variable. I've added the following to my ~/.profile: # Turn off power status when using spaceship prompt export SPACESHIP_BATTERY_SHOW = false

Hello folks! It's been a while since my last tech-related blog post. Sometimes I think that the problems my team and I solve on a daily basis simply don't merit a blog post. However, I want to improve my writing skills and get as much knowledge out there as I can.

Red bookshelf from Target This is a bookshelf that we bought from Target. I tried to get as much as the detail as possible.  Eventually we will move two of these into my office and maybe put a fish tank in the middle:

Alaska - August 2019

Image
There are so many things to say about Alaska. Beautiful scenery, amazing wildlife, and fresh seafood. These are just a few ways to experience what Alaska has to offer. During our stay, we experienced the joy of glacier sightseeing, breathtaking bus tours through untouched wilderness, Iditarod sleigh dog training, and, to unfortunately say, the dangers that threaten it all. How did we get there? The Alaska Marine Highway System is a state-run ferry organization that runs through several coastline cities. This ferry ran from Bellingham, WA to Wittier, AL through the beautiful inner channels of B.C. and southeast Alaska and Gulf of Alaska. We stopped in Ketchikan, Juneau, Yakutat, and finally Wittier. The trip took four full days on the vessel and five nights. We took the Kennicott. Originally designed to respond to oil spills, the Kennicott provides all the useful amenities you would expect. A sizable dining area, solar decks, comfortable seating, and my personal favorite: The

My Personal Reading Goals

Image
I realize that, as I get further along in life, it's even more important to maintain a regular reading habit for continual education. An idle mind tends towards complacency, complacency tends towards ignorance, and ignorance is what ultimately lures us into giving in to our emotions, especially the most sensitive ones. Anger, hate, lust, indulgence, misanthropy, and guile. These feelings are something that were not a problem for me when I was young, but now that I'm older there is an unwanted emergence. A manifestation of being taken advantage of, getting hurt, an ardent and unrelenting desire and pursuit for self-gain. However, understanding the humanities, history, psychology, and general human mannerisms has helped with coping with some of these emotions. I understand this is not enough. The battle against our darkest emotions is not merely psychological. There is a spiritual aspect I have come to also regularly neglect like a swinging pendulum. I do not want to be a sw

Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve 2019

An outstanding sight to see hills and mountain sides covered in something rather than grass, trees, or rocks. Luckily, we caught the reserve in one of if it's peak moments. The California Wildflower Bloom occurs when conditions are just right. An unusual amount of rain paired with desert landscapes causes the wildflowers to flourish. Because of the drought in years prior, there is no grass or other vegetation that competes for nutrients [1].  The result, what most people commonly know as the California Super Bloom. We woke up treacherously early to secure our parking spot. The two hour commute through the infamous L.A. traffic put us there at 9:00am. We waited about fifteen minutes before arriving at the ranger booth to pay our reasonable $10 entrance fee. By the time we left, the line developed to down the main road of the entrance. Getting up with the sun was a worthwhile decision. Being at Antelope Valley during the super bloom was surreal. For several brief moments I fe

A Review of "How We Got The Bible"

Image
"How We Got The Bible" written by Neil R. Lightfoot is a concise and introductory book that gave me a foundational panoramic of the history of the Bible. From manuscripts to being in the possession of the "boy in the plow", the history of Bible no doubt is a miraculous one. This is my first time reading about the history of the Bible and honestly I was quiet overdue. It's something every Christian who believes in the Bible should know. The contents and basis of our faith are inscribed in this wonderful compilation. Lightfoot has done a fantastic job explaining the important aspects of the discipline, without ever becoming tangential. Chapter after chapter, the authorship and canonization of both the Old Testament and New Testament are concisely described. However, even though the book is introductory, it wasn't all an easy read. The terminology and rhetoric used has a very academic tone, meant for a  more thorough discussion at the end of each chapter.
